Date: 25 May 2001

Hutchison Telecom and Motorola jointly hold
enabler21 Programme 2000-2001 Award Presentation Ceremony

Six awardees to take flight in the telecom world

Following a series of training programmes and a panel interview, six local university students have each been granted the enabler21 award for 2000 - 2001. They will receive a HK$10,000 scholarship and will travel abroad in July to visit Motorola headquarter in the United States, where Motorola University was founded, to receive additional training. Upon returning to Hong Kong, the six winning enablers will be employed by either Hutchison Telecom or Motorola, or participate in summer internships in the two companies.

The enabler21 Programme is a scalable education program jointly organize by Hutchison Telecom and Motorola that helps students develop their creative potential and aims to assist in training local telecom professionals.

enabler21 Programme Nurtures Six Young Telecom Professionals

Rapid development of Hong Kong's telecommunications industry has created persistent high demand for telecom professionals. Hutchison Telecom and Motorola have responded by jointly organizing the enabler21 Programme 2000-2001 to offer university students an opportunity to acquire in-depth technical knowledge and receive practical training. Through this initiative, the two companies are playing key roles in educating talented young students considering careers in the local telecommunications industry.

Participants in this year's enabler21 Programme submitted creative proposals covering two topics: the first identifying an innovative 3G application; the second designing and promoting a unique multi-functional communications device.

Participants from Hong Kong's seven universities were selected to attend a panel interview. The six awardees for the enabler21 Programme 2000-2001 were selected in May. They are Lee Pak Ching and Xu Zhiyun from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lau Hau Wing, Ming Tsz Fung and Pun Ching Bun from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Lo Kin Man from the University of Hong Kong.

Identifying Potential Talent for the Booming Local Telecom Industry

Mr. Stephen Ngan, the Deputy Managing Director and Sales and Marketing Director of Hutchison Telecom, said, "The proposals submitted by the participants for this year's enabler21 Programme were very creative. Their work demonstrated impressive insights and in-depth knowledge of 3G technology and their outstanding performances clearly reflected their extensive preparation before the panel interview."

"The panel interview participants faced a rigorous challenge, having not only to highlight the key points of their proposals but also to respond to judges' questions. We were highly impressed by the performance of the participants, many of whom even combined knowledge with a welcome sense of humour," added Mr. Cliff Woo, the Deputy Managing Director and Wireless Networks Director of Hutchison Telecom.

Mr. Bruce Duysen, Senior Director, Asia Pacific Market Operations, Telecom Carrier Solutions Group of Motorola, said, "It is definitely a challenging task for the participants to prepare a feasible, creative and comprehensive proposal without the benefit of actual working experience in the telecommunications industry. They responded imaginatively, sourcing media clippings and conducting Internet-based research and then using these materials to explain the main points of their proposals during the panel interview."

Mr. Johnson Chow, Account Director, Telecom Carrier Solutions Group of Motorola, remarked, "Participants were required to conduct their presentations and answer judges' questions in English. This was an additional challenge to all those non-native English participants"

Support from seven universities gratefully acknowledged

The enabler21 Programme 2000-2001 has received generous support from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the seven local universities in Hong Kong: City University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong Baptist University; Lingnan University; The Chinese University of Hong Kong; The Polytechnic University; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and The University of Hong Kong. Students of all seven universities were encouraged to participate in this innovative education and training programme.
