State-of-the-Art billing system for Hutchison Telecoms'
3G business

Hutchison Telecoms has appointed ADC to supply the billing system that will see it well positioned for the future with 3G.

"This new state-of-the-art system will be deployed for our future 3G requirements whilst having the capability to provide flexible and scalable support for the growing needs our Orange business," says Susan Buttsworth, Director of Billing and IT at Hutchison. "The new system will allow us to be very responsive to the market, develop new products quickly and offer innovative billing services and solutions to our customers in both the short and long term.

"Our Orange business has changed enormously over the past 12 months and as the business has grown so too have the needs of billing and our IT department. It will be great to have this new system to support this growth as well as our 3G requirements.

"Its flexibility and responsiveness will allow us to respond quickly to marketing initiatives. It is the icing on the cake. Our CDMA Orange One service will continue to bring new and exciting offers to the marketplace and we also have our mobile reseller business, paging, PocketWatch and ISP operations. This new billing solution will support existing services across all these areas and will also allow us to provide real innovations in the services we offer further down the road with our 3G network."

The contract between Hutchison and ADC for the billing software and services is worth just over $10 million over five years. Hutchison has committed to significant capital expenditure on IT systems with the replacement billing system and an accounting and business support platform to provide the foundation for future growth. The new billing system will be operational by early next year.

ADC is a leading supplier of innovative communications equipment, software and services and will provide their Singl.eView billing system for the Hutchison business. Singl.eView is a component of Singularit.e, ADC's operations support system (OSS) suite for real-time customer management, service management and service fulfilment.

ADC's vice president sales and marketing Asia Pacific, Malcolm Lower said: "Hutchison identified Singl.eView as providing for future services involving new charging and billing requirements, such as those available on a 3G network.

"These requirements highlighted the importance of Singl.eView's architecture and its flexibility in future-proofing Hutchison's business, no matter what new products were introduced or direction the industry took."

Hutchison Telecoms will run its new billing system on three Hewlett Packard SuperDome servers. The platform choice was based on Hewlett Packard's ability to provide a mission-critical solution that provided the least possible risk to the project.

Susan Buttsworth said: "We were particularly impressed with HP's Total Customer Experience (TCE) approach to the solution. HP provided a complete account team and dedicated Solution Manager to provide what we believe is the most complex Superdome configuration in the Southern Hemisphere".
