[Hong Kong, 4 March 2003] Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT), a subsidiary of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), held a ceremony today marking the completion by China Harbour Engineering Company of a deepwater berth which will form the core of the new Jakarta container hub port.
The completion of the project signifies an important step in the overall development plans of PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia II and HPH as they transform the port of Jakarta into a world class container hub. Through a continuous investment programme, an additional 513 metres of quay deck is being developed which will link the facilities of JICT and KOJA Container Terminal.
HPH Group Managing Director Mr. John Meredith commented on the event, "HPH is fully committed to supporting the development of Indonesia's major hub port. HPH is also transferring the latest port technologies and actively training the local work force."
Since privatisation in 1999, JICT has dedicated over US$350 million in upgrading its operations and facilities in Jakarta. To increase the efficiency of the terminals, JICT has invested in state-of-the-art container handling equipment, has expanded the quay length of deepwater berths and is constructing 32 hectares of container yard.
The official grand opening of Jakarta Container Port takes place later this month. This meaningful event will celebrate the launch into full operations of Indonesia's new container hub.
