[Jakarta, 24th March 2003] Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) and P.T. Pelabuhan Indonesia II (PELINDO II) held a ceremony today marking the official launch of Indonesia's new container hub port in Jakarta and the beginning of a new era of international trade for Indonesia. HPH and PELINDO II together have transformed the port of Jakarta into a world-class container hub.
The new hub port, comprising of Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) and KOJA Container Terminal, possesses the ideal geographic advantage of being located on the major East-West tradelanes. The construction of additional quay deck has created a continuous berth of 1,200 metres linking the facilities of JICT and KOJA. The new facilities are capable of simultaneously handling several container vessels of the latest generation, making Jakarta container port a world-class container hub port for the country of Indonesia.
Since 1999, HPH and PELINDO II have committed over US$400 million in a comprehensive modernisation programme of the terminals, with a goal of increasing its annual container handling capacity to over 3.5 million TEU. The company has constructed 513 metres of deepwater quay with the capacity to handle today's largest container vessels. In addition to building 32 hectares of container yard, the terminal has also constructed and enhanced supporting infrastructure such as additional gatehouse lanes and the engineering store building.
John Meredith, HPH Group Managing Director commented at the ceremony, "With the strong partnership of PELINDO II and HPH, we have significantly increased productivity, efficiency and throughput and have successfully transformed the existing terminals into Indonesia's first hub port of which its people can feel justifiably proud."
Abdullah Syaifuddin, President Director of PELINDO II said, "Today is a historic event as Indonesia's new hub port launches into full operation, offering shipping lines the best in terms of value-added, time sensitive services. The development of ports in Indonesia will give the people of Indonesia greater trade independence and in turn a greater role in the region."
With major investments in state-of-the-art container handling equipment and the latest port operations technology, JICT is set to become Indonesia's first international container hub.
