(Hong Kong, 16 November 2003) Over 300 staff from Hutchison Group companies have vowed to serve the community at a ceremony today officially launching the Hutchison Volunteer Team.
The ceremony, officiated by Chairman Mr Li Ka-shing at the Group's Annual Sports and Family Day, also marked the beginning of a long-term programme that will involve HWL volunteers reaching out to serve the community.
One of the first programmes that the HWL volunteers will embark on will be talks to kindergarten pupils and their parents about food heath.
Trained by AS Watson's pharmacists, the HWL volunteers will speak as "Health Ambassadors" on 22 November and 29 November to kindergarten pupils and their parents about the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and keeping a healthy eating habit.
More talks along this theme are being scheduled for the coming year. Other activities being planned include visits to hospitals and elderly homes.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mr Li expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and care that the HWL volunteers demonstrate. Mr Li is a strong believer in helping those in need and has through his charity foundation contributed enormously to causes like education and medical care.
Mr Li also told the 12,000 staff and family members attending the Annual Sports and Family Day that HWL would surely continue to grow despite the keen competition that the Group has been facing around the world.
"This year we have a record high number of staff employed by Hutchison, a total of 167,000 employees in 39 countries.
"I hope that all of us will work hard together to create even better results and a better tomorrow for the Group," Mr Li said.
The HWL Group Annual Sports and Family Day is a yearly event at which HWL staff of different Group companies and their families get together, get familiar with one another and to enjoy the performances, contests and games organised by the member companies of the Group.
