(Hong Kong, 31 December 2003) Hutchison Whampoa Limited ("HWL") has been named the winner of the 2003 Company Awards - Hong Kong by The Banker.
The Banker magazine has invited more than 500 companies from 35 countries/regions to enter the awards. Since responses from six of the countries/regions could not meet the strict requirements of selection, only 29 awards were granted in the end.
The prerequisite for selection was a high standard of legitimacy and transparency. According to The Banker magazine, other important criteria include historic financial performance; adoption and impact of new technology; potential for revenue and profit growth in the home market or globally; and governance and corporate social responsibility.
HWL has been able to record satisfactory results amidst the world economic downturn in 2003, reflecting the Group's financial soundness and ability to adapt to changes innovatively.
HWL has won some 30 awards in 2003, including The Global 500 from Forbes, Best Corporate Governance - First Prize (Asia: Hong Kong & China) from Euromoney, Best Company in Asia - Conglomerates from Global Finance, The Best Credits in Asia - weighted by assets - First Prize from The Asset, Top 50 Asian Issuers - First Prize from IFR Asia and Top 500 Chinese Companies in the World - First Prize from Yazhou Zhoukan, and Asia's 200 Leading Companies - Hong Kong - Third Prize from Far East Economic Review.
