HAECO Signs Chek Lap Kok Franchise Agreement
Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited
(HAECO) has today signed a 20-year franchise agreement with the
Airport Authority (AA), to provide base and line aircraft maintenance
services at Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok.
This is a particularly significant award in
being the only contract granted by the AA for both base and line
maintenance, making HAECO the only full maintenance service provider
at the airport.
Representing a total investment of HK$1.4 billion,
HAECO's new facilities will cover an area of some 44,000 square
metres, located at the western end of Chek Lap Kok, for the base
maintenance facility and 6,700 square metres within the main terminal
building for the line maintenance facility. The base maintenance
hangar will have sufficient capacity for three B747-400 aircraft
at one time, and will be able to accommodate the next generation
of B747-600 in its largest central bay. It will be constructed
around a steel frame, and its vast, 220 metre-long roof will be
suspended by giant steel cantilevers, to provide an open, column-free
working area inside.
The hanger will be supported by a full range
of component overhaul and repair workshops, test laboratories
and bonded storage for airline spares, as well as office and administration
buildings. HAECO have appointed Meinhardt as their designers
and project managers and Dragages et Travaux Publics (HK) Ltd.,
as their main contractor for construction of the facilities, with
completion scheduled for April 1998.
John Slosar, Managing Director of HAECO, commented:
"This franchise agreement is a very important step for HAECO.
This world-class facility will greatly expand our business opportunities
in the future. When Chek Lap Kok opens in 1998, it will confirm
Hong Kong's role as Asia's aviation "hub" and will create
enormous opportunities for growth for both the aviation industry
and Hong Kong"
