The topping-out ceremony for Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. (HAECO)'s state-of-the-art new maintenance hangar at the airport at Chek Lap Kok (CLK) took place today. The hangar is one of two HAECO facilities under construction at the airport, representing a total investment for the company of HK$1,400 million.
Located at the western end of the airport site, the 44,000 square metre facility includes a three-bay maintenance hangar, with the capacity to accommodate three Boeing 747-400 aircraft at one time. It will also accommodate the future large capacity aircraft (B747-600 and A3XX) planned by Boeing and Airbus Industrie. The steel frame cantilever roof provides 15,000 square metres of hangar area entirely column-free. This will be supported by a comprehensive array of component overhaul and repair workshops, test facilities, stores and offices, housed in a multi-level building to the rear.
Main contractor Dragages et Travaux Publics (HK) Ltd. began work on the new HAECO facility in October 1996 and completion will be in time for the airport opening next year. Dragages is also the main contractor for Cathay Pacific Catering Services (HK)'s CLK flight kitchen and Cathay Pacific City - the airline's new headquarters at CLK.
HAECO has a 20-year franchise agreement with the Airport Authority to provide base and line maintenance at CLK and will be the only full service provider at the new airport.
Officiating at the topping-out ceremony, John Slosar, Managing Director of HAECO, said, "When CLK opens next year, it will bring immediate relief from the pressures and constraints Kai Tak has put on the growth of Hong Kong's aviation industry over the past few years. The increase in capacity into Hong Kong will doubtless bring new business for HAECO, as CLK's only provider of both base and line maintenance services. This new facility - which will be one of Asia's most technologically advanced - will enable us to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and to guarantee our customers a world class service."
Gerald Mille, Managing Director of Dragages Asia, said,"CLK has involved developments on a scale never before seen in Hong Kong. It is a privilege to be associated with this history-making project and to work with HAECO and other Swire Group companies on the construction of their innovative facilities at the new airport."
