Swire Beverages Ltd. today opened its non-carbonated beverage plant, the largest in China, in Dongguan, in the province of Guangdong.
Swire Beverages (Dongguan) Ltd. is a US$45 million joint-venture investment between Swire Beverages, which owns 85%, and Dongguan Huaxin Industry & Commerce Corp. which holds the remaining 15%. The 50,000 square metre plant employs some 180 workers and is equipped with advanced hotfill bottling and canning lines. Annual production capacity is 11 million unit cases.
This new facility will manufacture the popular Chinese fruit juice brand, Tian Yu Di (Heaven and Earth), a range of fruit juices developed by The Coca-Cola Company specifically for the Chinese market. The brand is the first local fruit juice brand developed and produced in China by an international soft drinks company.
In addition to producing Tian Yu Di juices and mineralised water, the Dongguan facility will also manufacture Hi-C teas and Nescafe. Products from the plant will be distributed throughout China. In fact, the plant is already producing Nescafe for Hong Kong and may do other products for the region in time.
According to 1996 statistics, over 1.4 billion unit cases of non-carbonated beverage were sold in China. "With the rapid growth of the juice and tea drinks market in China, there is a huge potential in this category for quality beverages." commented Mr. Jim Conybeare, Chairman of Swire Beverages. "This new facility will allow us to fill this growing market demand." he added.
Mr. John Farrell, President of Coca-Cola China Ltd. said, "With the improvement of living standards, consumers in China are increasingly demanding high-quality products. The premium quality of Tian Yu Di and Hi-C products offer consumers quality choices of beverages."
Madam Pan Beilei, Vice Chairman of China National Council of Light Industry also remarked, "Both The Coca-Cola Company and Swire Beverages have demonstrated their commitment to developing China's quality soft drink market."
Swire Beverages, which is held 87.5% by Swire Pacific and 12.5% by The Coca-Cola Company, is the principal holding company for the group's soft drink activities in China. This facility in Dongguan is the 8th joint venture for Swire Beverages in conjunction with Coca-Cola in China.
