Swire Guangdong Coca-Cola Limited (SGCC) has boosted its Coca-Cola production capacity in Southern China with the opening today (11th December, 1998) of a US$35 million new extension plant in Guangzhou.
With this expansion, which brings to a total area of 26,000 square metres and a total work force of 1,300 including associated sales centre staff and distribution chain workers, SGCC is now Swire Beverages' largest bottling facility in Mainland China. SGCC produces and distributes world leading brands Coca-Cola, diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta. In addition, it also distributes the local juice drinks and mineralised water brand Tian Yu Di.
SGCC is a joint venture between Guangdong Foodstuffs Import and Export (Group) Corp. (30%), COFCO Industries Development Co. (19%) and Swire Coca-Cola HK Ltd. (51%) which is wholly owned by Swire Beverages Ltd. Swire Beverages Ltd. is in turn jointly held by Swire Pacific Ltd. and The Coca-Cola Company.
Swire Beverages Chairman, Jim Conybeare, said the new extension plant would join ranks with Swire's other bottling facilities in providing quality soft drinks on the Mainland.
"Our focus now is on developing the best sales and delivery systems to meet the needs of our consumers and customers. This will involve a combination of establishing direct sales through an expanding distribution network and working more closely with many of our strong wholesaler channels," Mr. Conybeare said.
John Farrell, President of Coca-Cola China Ltd., said the expansion came in response to an increased demand for Coca-Cola products.
"Over the last year, sales volume has been very strong in Guangzhou," said Mr. Farrell. "This new facility marks another commitment by The Coca-Cola Company and Swire Beverages to bring the world's best-selling soft drinks to every consumer in this market of 46 million."
Swire Beverages, one of Coca-Cola's anchor bottlers, has interests in nine bottling plants in Mainland China. At present, over 9,500 staff are employed in its franchise territories which cover Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the United States with a total franchise population of about 400 million. Swire's involvement with Coca-Cola dates back to 1965 when the Coca-Cola franchise for Hong Kong was acquired.
