DAIRY FARM INCREASES ITS INVESTMENT IN SINGAPORE
SINGAPORE, 10 January 2000 - Dairy Farm today announced that its Singapore subsidiary, Guardian Pharmacy Holdings Limited, has acquired the 30% interest in Guardian SEA Pte Ltd from Cycle & Carriage Ltd at S$6.6 million. With the completion of this acquisition, Guardian Singapore is now 100% owned by Dairy Farm.
Michael Kok, Regional Director, South Asia of Dairy Farm said: "This acquisition will complement our strategy to consolidate our Guardian business which has been performing well over the past year. We will continue to pursue aggressive growth and development plans in the new millennium to further enhance its position as the leading retail pharmacy chain in Singapore. Consumers can also look forward to improved store formats and a broader range of products and services."
Founded in 1972, Guardian has over 25 years of experience in the Singapore market. It operates the largest pharmacy chain in Singapore comprising 55 stores offering professional services such as patient-care counseling and prescription drug dispensing as well as health and beauty products. Guardian employs some 550 staff in Singapore and is the largest private sector employer of pharmacists with over 60 full-time qualified personnel.
Dairy Farm is a leading food and drugstore retailer in the Asia Pacific Region. At 30 June 1999, the Group and its associates operated 1,926 outlets, principally supermarkets, convenience stores and drugstores, employed some 72,500 people in nine countries and had sales of US$6.6 billion in 1998.
