Singapore, 7 July, 2000 - Giant Hypermarket, Singapore's first ethnic hypermarket, is pleased to announce its official opening on 7 July at the IMM Building in Jurong. Mr Percy Weatherall, Group Managing Director of Jardine Matheson, will be the guest of honour for the occasion.

The Giant brand is well known to Singaporeans who regularly shop in Malaysia. It currently operates two hypermarkets and five supermarkets, each with an average size of 100,000 square feet in Malaysia. Giant is 90% owned by Dairy Farm International, a leading food and drugstore retailer in the Asia-Pacific Region.

"Today marks an important milestone in the history of Dairy Farm, South Asia and Giant TMC Bhd," said Mr Ronald J. Floto, Group Chief Executive of Dairy Farm. "This venture is an important part of our strategic expansion in the region. The opening of Giant Hypermarket will serve to expand our market share in Singapore by targeting the mass market. It also signifies the Group's confidence in Singapore and its commitment to the growth of the retail industry in the country."

Added Mr Francis Teng, Executive Director, Giant TMC Bhd, "This is our first hypermarket venture outside Malaysia. Our vision is to make the Giant brand name as trusted a household name in Singapore as it is today in Malaysia. Giant Hypermarket, Singapore will offer customers the same great value that they have come to associate with Giant in Malaysia."

Giant Hypermarket located at the ground floor of the IMM Building, will cater specifically to the individual needs of the different ethnic groups in Singapore. Designed to ensure strong local appeal, it will be a one-stop shopping destination for the average Singaporean family.

Giant Hypermarket enjoys substantial competitive advantage in its operations due to cost savings in infrastructure and backend operations as well as the collective buying power of the Dairy Farm Group and Giant TMC Bhd which allows the company to purchase goods at attractive volume discounts from suppliers. It intends to pass on these savings to consumers.

"We had a soft opening last week and we are delighted with the response of the public to Giant Hypermarket so far. The ethnic theme and attractive prices at the hypermarket have been packing in shoppers. We are seeing record crowds at the hypermarket and sales turnover is well beyond our expectations," said Mr Michael Kok, Regional Director of Dairy Farm, South Asia.

The IMM site offers consumers convenience and accessibility as it provides ample free parking and free shuttle bus service to and from the Jurong East MRT Station.

Dairy Farm International is a leading food and drugstore retailer in the Asia-Pacific Region. At 31st December 1999, the Group and its associates operated 2,063 outlets, principally supermarkets, convenience stores and drugstores, employed some 80,000 people in nine territories and had 1999 sales of US$6.8 billion. The Dairy Farm Group currently operates over 230 outlets in Singapore under Cold Storage Supermarkets, Jasons, 7-Eleven, Photo Finish, Handifix and Guardian Pharmacy.
