DAIRY FARM INTERNATIONAL/CASINO LAUNCH TAIWAN HYPERMARKET PROJECT
7th March 1996 - Asia's largest supermarket operator, Dairy Farm International (DFI),
and leading French retailer Casino Group (CG), today announced a 50/50 joint venture
hypermarket project in Taiwan.
In a joint announcement of the development, Mr Graeme Seabrook, Managing Director of
DFI, which is already Taiwan's largest supermarket operator, and Mr Georges Plassat,
Vice- Chairman of CG, said that the two companies have decided to pilot a new hypermarket
format. With its highly mobile population of some 22 million, and one of the highest per
capita GDP figures in Asia, Taiwan is the ideal market for the concept.
The companies said that the joint venture would bring together the complementary
strengths of the two partners: DFI's unequalled expertise in discount food retailing in
Asia, and CG's specialist knowledge in managing the extensive range of general merchandise
needed to operate a successful hypermarket business.
They said that hypermarkets required sophisticated merchandise control systems backed
up by leading edge technology. CG will bring to the venture its extensive experience in
these systems and its considerable expertise in information technology.
The viability of a fully-fledged hypermarket chain in Taiwan, with possible extensions
of the concept elsewhere in Asia, will be considered following the evaluation of the pilot
scheme.
DFI operates a total of 2,760 retail outlets in 11 countries worldwide, of which 1,346
are in Asia. DFI's total sales in 1995, including its associates, totalled US$11.7 billion.
The Casino Group operates 106 hypermarkets in France and has two under construction in
Warsaw, Poland. The company reported total sales in 1994 of US$11.7 billion.
