GP Batteries Relocates Li-Ion Manufacturing Operations
from US to Taiwan
28 August 1998, Singapore - Mainboard-listed GP Batteries International Limited announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, GP Lithium Batteries LLC, Waterbury, Connecticut, is taking steps to relocate its manufacturing operations for production of lithium ion ("Li-Ion") rechargeable batteries to the Group's existing plant in Taiwan. These battery products include Li-Ion cells and rechargeable battery packs for use in notebook computers and other portable electronic devices.
This is in line with GP Batteries' strategy to enhance competitiveness of its battery production by relocating manufacturing to lower cost countries in Asia. It will also place the factory closer to portable computer and other electronic equipment manufacturers.
Following the relocation plan, production of Li-Ion batteries will be shifted to GP Batteries' existing plant in Hsin Chu, Taiwan which is presently manufacturing primary layer built batteries. This plant will be upgraded to accommodate new production activities.
Apart from Li-Ion batteries, GP Batteries also produces a wide range of Nickel Metal Hydride and Nickel Cadmium rechargeable batteries as well as primary batteries. The addition of Li-Ion batteries will further enhance the Group's market position in the rechargeable battery industry.
