SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (continued) Financial instruments (continued) Financial assets (continued) Classification and subsequent measurement of financial assets (before application of HKFRS 9 on 1 April 2018) (continued) Available-for-sale financial assets (continued) Dividends on available-for-sale equity instruments are recognised in profit or loss when the Group’s right to receive the dividends is established. Available-for-sale equity investments that do not have a quoted market price in an active market and whose fair value cannot be reliably measured are measured at cost less any identified impairment losses at the end of each reporting period (see the accounting policy in respect of impairment loss on financial assets below). Loans and receivables Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market. Subsequent to initial recognition, loans and receivables (including amounts due from related parties, debtors, other receivables, loans to a joint venture, pledged deposits, restricted bank deposits, deposit in a financial institution, deposits receivable from stakeholders, and bank balances and cash) are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less any impairment (see accounting policy on impairment loss on financial assets below). Interest income is recognised by applying the effective interest rate, except for short-term receivables where the recognition of interest would be immaterial. Impairment of financial assets (before application of HKFRS 9 on 1 April 2018) Financial assets, other than those at FVTPL, are assessed for indicators of impairment at the end of each reporting period. Financial assets are considered to be impaired when there is objective evidence that, as a result of one or more events that occurred after the initial recognition of the financial asset, the estimated future cash flows of the investment have been affected. For an available-for-sale equity investment, a significant or prolonged decline in the fair value of that investment below its cost is considered to be objective evidence of impairment. For all other financial assets, objective evidence of impairment could include: • significant financial difficulty of the issuer or counterparty; or • breach of contract, such as a default or delinquency in interest or principal payments; or • it becoming probable that the borrower will enter bankruptcy or financial re-organisation.
