To minimize water consumption in our business operations, we apply water-efficient equipment in our various business operations. Most of the public toilets in our shopping centers have been equipped with automatic sensors at washing basins and urinals, and dual flush-system devices at water closets. Water aerators have been installed to shower facilities to reduce water flow in all guest rooms in our hotels. We also installed a 1,000-litre storage tank in the basement of Mira Place Carpark to collect discarded water from the fire-fighting system for future cleaning purposes. Due to our business nature, there is no issue on sourcing water. Minimizing and Recycling of Waste in Daily Operations Green Practice to Minimize Waste We established green purchasing and practices across our business and back office operations to ease the burden to the environment. As such, exploring green and sustainable products is one of our missions during the vendor selection process. For example, we adopted environmental-friendly soybean ink, PEFC certified paper, eco-friendly cleaning chemicals, sourced sustainable seafood products provided by suppliers operating green fish farming, and applied FSC certified materials for our mall decorations. In order to reduce the use of paper, we havemaximized the use of internet technology to promote paperless operations which is also applied to our daily purchasing and tendering procedures, and set 2-sided black- &-white printing by default. This year, we have taken a step further to engage our customers in saving paper by launching the first box-free initiatives to encourage customers to pick up their CNY pudding orders without packaged boxes, in exchange for small gifts. To provide for a green takeaway, we have implemented a series of programmes to reduce the use of single-use plastics in our restaurants – provision of paper straws; use of paper bags without lamination coating and environmental-friendly containers and utensils made of biodegradable materials such as bamboo pulp, sugarcane, etc. To reduce the distribution of plastic umbrella bags, our malls set up eco- friendly umbrella dryers at entrances in rainy days, and place carpets and electrical ground blowers to help drain wet floors. The “Umbrella Bags Reduction Accreditation Program” organized by Greeners Action gave us the Gold Award in recognition. Waste Recycling We also established a comprehensive recycling program covering various types of wastes generated in our operations. For instance, recycling bins are provided at Mira Place Tower A, Mira Place 1 & 2 and The Mira Hong Kong for collecting paper, plastics, aluminum cans, glass containers and amenity bottles from guest rooms for recycling. We also joined the Christmas and Peach Blossom Trees Recycling Programmes organized by Environment Protection Department. A licensed recycler was engaged to manage the electronic wastes generated in the operations. The service has been further extended to our tenants of Mira Place Tower A, Mira Place 1 & 2 in early 2020 so as to promote proper treatment of electronic wastes and turn wastes to resources. This year, Mira Place have received the “Diamond Award” in the “Programme on Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste Commendation Scheme” organized by Environmental Protection Department in recognition of our achievement in waste recycling. Water Consumption in Hong Kong Operations 10 Our travel business operates in leased office premises in Hong Kong of which the water usage was very minimal and its supply was controlled by the respective building management, thus water consumption data is not available 035 Environmental, Social and Governance Report Miramar Hotel and Investment Company, Limited Annual Report 2021
