Press Release
(Hong Kong, 3 October 2002) - Shui On Building Contractors Limited (SOBC) and Shui On Construction Limited (SOC), subsidiaries of Shui On Construction and Materials Limited (SOCAM; stock code: 0983), have won 14 awards at the "Safe Working Cycle Seminar and Award Presentation", including gold awards in "Best Foreman / Supervisor", "Best Hazard Identification Activity Team" and "Best Presentation" as well as 11 silver and bronze awards (see attachment for details).
The Occupational Health and Safety Council (OHSC) has set "Safe Working Cycle" as the theme for this year's promotional campaign for the construction industry. The Safe Working Cycle Seminar and Award Presentation was conducted to recognize the industry's efforts in implementing the Safe Working Cycle. Fifteen out of 47 contesting sites were shortlisted as finalists to participate in the Safe Working Cycle Seminar. Three of the shortlisted sites belong to SOBC and SOC.
Shui On started implementing the Safe Working Cycle in July 2000. The daily morning meeting in the Safe Working Cycle enables two-way communication between project management and workers. As a result, more practicable safety measures can be adopted to meet the actual needs of frontline workers. Since the implementation of the Safe Working Cycle, site safety performance has shown marked improvement, and a stronger sense of teamwork and participation has also been developed.
SOBC and SOC are wholly owned subsidiaries of Shui On Construction and Materials Limited (SOCAM). As early as June 1992, SOBC became the first building contractor to achieve ISO 9002 certification in Hong Kong. SOC also obtained ISO 9002 certification in December 1995. Both companies were awarded the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001 certification by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) in November 2000. They were also awarded ISO 14001 certification by the HKQAA and the China National Accreditation Committee for Environmental System Certification Bodies (CACEB) in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
