Swire Beverages opens its 8th Mainland China Coca-Cola plant today (26th February, 1998) in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province.
The new US$18 million plant, named Swire Coca-Cola Beverages Hefei Ltd., will serve Anhui Province's population of 61 million. It employs about 200 workers and occupies more than 40,000 square metres. The new plant will manufacture and market Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite along with the China brand beverage Smart.
Swire Coca-Cola Beverages Hefei is jointly owned by BC Development Co. Ltd. (70%), China International Trust and Investment Corporation (20%) and the state-owned company Anhui Jiu Shi Group (10%). BC Development is a joint venture between Swire Beverages Ltd. (85%) and China International Trust and Investment Corporation. Swire Beverages Ltd. is in turn held by Swire Pacific Ltd. (87.5%) and The Coca-Cola Company.
Swire Beverages Chairman, Jim Conybeare, said the Hefei plant joins two other Swire-partnered interior China Coca-Cola facilities in Xian and Zhengzhou to service Central China.
"With Coca-Cola products proving to be more and more popular in China, placing a plant in Hefei means tens of millions more consumers will be able to enjoy Coca-Cola beverages on a regular basis," Mr. Conybeare added.
"This new plant gives a major boost to our expansion in China and further demonstrates our commitment to this market," said Douglas N. Daft, President, Middle and Far East Group, and Senior Vice President of The Coca-Cola Company.
"This state-of-the-art facility gives us greater access to the thriving economy of Anhui and represents an integral part of our US$800m investment program across China," said Mr. Daft.
Swire Beverages, one of Coca-Cola's anchor bottlers, has interests in nine bottling plants in Mainland China. At present over 9,000 staff are employed in its various operating companies in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and the United States. The population of the markets served by these operating companies is estimated to be 412 million. Swire's involvement with Coca-Cola dates back to 1965 when the Coca-Cola franchise for Hong Kong was acquired.
